by Kristen Hayton
Want some superfoods to feast on this summer? Try out these 4 yummy, juicy superfruits! Blueberries, Elderberries, Pomegranates, and Tart Cherries truly are Summer’s Superfoods.
Blueberries
Blueberries are full of powerful antioxidants. They support brain health and cognitive ability.
According to Superfoods HealthStyle: Proven Strategies for Lifelong Health, the nutrients in blueberries have been associated with prevention of:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Cancer
- Diabetes prevention
- Urinary tract infections
- Cardiovascular disease
- Vision degradation
and diseases of the eye - Inflammation
Blueberries are a versatile fruit great in smoothies, on cereal, and in recipes. My kids devour them frozen. Just wash a pint of blueberries and then freeze the berries! I leave them right in the pint container. My kids come and take them out of the freezer by the handfuls. They make a great healthy, cooling treat on a hot day.
Elderberries
Elderberries are not as commonly known as blueberries, but offer many great health benefits.
Elderberries can:
- Inhibit the flu
- Inhibit respiratory bacteria
- Boost the immune system
Elderberries are also great in juices, and are great on top of cereals, in yogurt, or on ice cream. They make a delicious jam, as well.
Pomegranates
Pomegranates are an interesting fruit to eat. Most kids love to eat them as they have such a unique texture and taste. My kids love the popping of the seeds.
Pomegranates are a great source of antioxidants which help fight:
- Cancer
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diabetes
- Inflammation
They also boost your immune system, helping to fight and prevent colds and flu.
Pomegranates are a great addition to a fruit salad.
They can be eaten on their own but do have a bit of an acquired flavor.
Pomegranate juice has become popular, but remember that store bought juice has few nutrients left by the time you drink it.
Tart Cherries
Cherries are great to help:
- Alleviate insomnia
- Reduce heart disease
- Reduce chances of
developing diabetes - Reduce inflammation
A nice chilled bowl of fresh cherries are a great treat on a hot summer afternoon. Cherries can also be juiced and make a nice addition to a frozen ice cream or other frozen dessert. Mix frozen cherries with some raw milk or yogurt. Stir it up and you have a delicious dessert!
Enjoy the wonderful fruits of the summer.
Remember, variety is the spice of life!
