BE Green: Transition Week – Green Smoothies Galore!

Hey there super heroes!  Welcome to the world of Green Smoothies!  Have you seen the delicious looking image depicting the 21 Day Green Smoothie Detox, and want to find out more?  Follow along with my experience of this detox program, starting with the initial transition week…

Today marks the last day of my transition week of the Green Smoothie Detox.  I am not new to raw foods, but having been away from home for four of the last six weeks, I have not been prioritizing getting a lot of good fresh fruit and greens in my diet.  It seemed like a great opportunity to clean up this part of my life, and I love the fact that you can sign up to do the detox, and it begins the following Sunday.

Fruit, Check! Veggies, Check!  Blender, Check!greensmoothie2-239x265

Even though I have dabbled in raw foods and green smoothies since 2010, I am still blown away at how easy it has been to add the foods into my diet.  I really thought it would be a lot harder.  It helps having the handy daily emails to motivate, and the fabulous recipes to inspire you to ease into this detox.

I live in Christchurch, New Zealand, and I am so lucky to have the abundance of locally grown organic kale available to purchase at the moment.  I have neglected my garden of late, so I don’t have any growing in what I like to call my jungle – named not so much for the wildlife, but more for the, shall we say, lack of organization out there.  In saying this, my location also means that the sweet tropical fruits are less available – either due to season, or my tight purse strings!  We do have apples available all year round, and my in-laws just delivered a supermarket bag full of feijoas, also called pineapple guava, I am looking forward to putting them to use!

Flexible Recipes

This has been the transition week, so I must admit that my evening meals have been peppered with cooked foods.  My air fryer has been cooking up kumera (sweet potato) to supplement my evening meals, especially with the recent rainy and cooler weather we have experienced. I do love to be guided, but I also love the encouragement given to use the recipes suggested as a starting point.  This was great for me for a few reasons:

  • I found some combinations of sweet fruits made the smoothies a bit too sweet for my liking.

  • I don’t easily have the opportunity to shop for fruit and veg daily, so often I would not have the correct ingredients, or have them in the quantity called for.

  • I am true to my Scottish roots, and tight fisted, hence the pineapple did not make it to the grocery checkout.

  • I ended up loving the spinach soup, and so made it twice.

Green Smoothie recipe – an example!

For your reading and viewing pleasure, I have snapped a couple of photos (I am an amateur when it comes to photography) to indicate the quantity of raw ingredients, and the volume of green smoothie the food created.  I haven’t thought of a name for this delicious creation yet. Please do feel free to suggest a name.

Ingredients:

  • Half a small orange
  • ¾ of a large red braeburn apple
  •  1 large stalk of celery
  • 4 stalks of kale
  •  ¾ cup of coconut water
  • I also added a teaspoon of “Super Greens” powder, as I had it in the cupboard, and thought it would be a nice addition.  Of course, this is optional

I really like the sort of spicy flavour that celery seems to give smoothies and soups.

Positive results to date

Possibly the best part of this detox so far is the easy prep and clean-up.  The simple but tasty recipes are easy to prepare and require only a few tools – a sharp knife, ice crushing blender and a chopping board should suffice.  I have also used a fork when juicing a lemon :o).  The clean-up is also quick due to the easy to clean ingredients – no greasy or sticky fats or oils to clean up.

I have found the recipes filling, but also seem to leave me feeling light and energetic, once the full feeling has dissipated.  I am looking forward to having more results to report in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned for my next post detailing my findings from the first proper week of the detox.
