Natural Beauty: 5 Great Uses For Coconut Oil!
by Kelly Marra
Have you ever woken up in the morning after trying a new beauty product and found acne all over your face? Or worse, hives all over your body from a new lotion? Once it looked like I had poison ivy all over my scalp and face from a new hair dye I tried.
Product Labels
After those experiences, and many more, it finally occurred to me to read product labels. I learned what to stay away from (sodium lauryl sulfate, BHA, parabens, etc), but the cost of getting ‘natural’ cosmetics, face wash and lotion was too much. And then I started simply using coconut oil. It’s a product I have in abundance in the house and as I’ve come to learn, is good on just about everything.
Benefits of Coconut Oil
1) Coconut oil is great to use topically and is a very healthy fat to eat, too.
2) One of the amazing things about coconut oil is that it is antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal making it great at relieving problems both on the outside and inside of our bodies.
3) Coconut oil is also beneficial because of its antioxidant properties. Oxidation of our cells is thought to be a main factor of skin aging. Consuming coconut oil for its antioxidant properties as well as applying it topically is a great way to keep our skin looking fresh and young.
Vitamin E is considered an antioxidant and protector of the skin, lucky for us coconut oil is a great source of vitamin E. Because it offers protection to the skin coconut oil is classified as SPF 4—not much protection but hey, it’s better than nothing!
Coconut Oil as a Beauty Product
Coconut oil is amazing as an all over beauty product. From leave in conditioner, to lotion, to shaving cream, to make up remover, to face wash, this one product does it all. All the while having major benefits on your skin.
Body Lotion: Try it on your skin after you get out of the shower. It absorbs into the skin quickly and leaves your hydrated and smelling divine.
Shaving Cream: Try using it while in the shower too instead of your regular shaving cream.
Makeup Remover/Face Wash: Have makeup that won’t come off? Splash your face with water, rub coconut oil onto your face, wash it and the makeup off and apply a fresh coat of coconut oil as a moisturizer.
Hair Conditioner: Melted coconut oil works wonders as a deep conditioning hair treatment. Just work it though your hair, leave it in for a few hours and wash out. Your hair will be shiny and soft, and as an added benefit you can kiss any dandruff goodbye.
Go ahead and reach for coconut oil next time you find yourself in the kitchen. Whether you cook with it or take it to your bathroom to use as a beauty product, you’ll be doing your body a favor.
