A Slurp for Sore Eyes: A Green Smoothie Recipe to Improve Your Eyesight

by Stacey Terry

My eyes lit up in the produce aisle the other day when I saw some lovely green grapes that looked oh so fresh and juicy!  I never know exactly what green smoothies I’m going to make during the week. I prefer to buy a variety of fruit and greens to ensure I get access to different vitamins and minerals. I also enjoy the creative opportunity to make something new each time I hit the blender button.

This recent green smoothie recipe was not only tasty… turns out this particular creation has some *real* visual appeal. Discover how you can improve your eye health with this yummy combination of fruits and greens!

Green Smoothie Ingredients that are Easy on the Eyes:

Bananas – Retina protection: This is something I haven’t tried, but apparently you can get some extra eye mileage out of your banana peels by boiling them in water or juicing them.  Use the juice or the boiled banana peel water as your liquid base for your smoothie and gain some extra retina protection benefits.

Blueberries – Protection from Glaucoma:  blueberries eye healthBlueberry consumption mayoffer a great deal of protection against retinal degeneration (particularly diabetic retinopathy and diabetic cataracts). Blueberries may also offer significant protection against the development of glaucoma because of its collagen enhancing actions.

Grapes – Macular degeneration: Grapes can prevent the age related loss of vision or macular degeneration. Three servings of grapes a day can reduce the risks of macular degeneration by over 36 %.

Fennel – Points to Keep an Eye on: Pliny, a Roman natural philosopher, believed that fennel improved eyesight. Thus, fennel juice was used as an effective cure for defective vision, night blindness and cataract. It was the custom to wash the eyes of a new-born baby with fennel water.

Spinach – Macular Degeneration: a yellow pigment in spinach, called lutein, which is plentiful in spinach has been shown to have a reputation for protecting against macular degeneration by boosting macular pigment which protects the eyes.  Fresh, raw spinach is one of the best sources of lutein that you can eat!
