Detoxification & Cleansing: How It Works

Raw Detoxification

When I changed my diet from SAD to raw, whole natural foods, I actually got sick! What is up with that?!

Then I gave it some thought, and realized, “You know what? This makes sense.

As I gained a greater understanding of the detoxification and cleansing process, I came to realize how it made sense that I might encounter some uncomfortable symptoms. It also made sense that I should welcome these with faith that my body is healing itself in its own way, in its own time, and in its own order.

That was 4 years ago, and occasionally still, when I feel a little low on energy, or am not quite up to par, I know it is simply my body fixing something else. She really is a good housekeeper!

There are basically three stages or processes that go on in your body within the larger processes of detoxification

Cleansing and Catabolism

The first stage of detoxification very similar to the core process of catabolism — a set of metabolic pathways that break down molecules into smaller units and release energy. Similarly, during the initial stages of a cleanse or detox, the buildup and storage of toxins held within the body are broken and released. Now your body then begins to clean out the toxins!

Toxins are primarily cleaned out from the liver. This organ performs amazing and miraculous vital functions! Due to this breakdown and release of built up toxins, you may feel like you are getting worse but the reality is that you are actually getting better — it is best let it happen naturally and not try to self-fix it with vitamins or drugs.

Symptoms of Detoxification

You may experience symptoms or side-effects such as weight loss, your bowels may become sluggish, or you may have occasional diarrhea. It’s not uncommon to have feelings of tiredness, weakness, disinclination to exercise, nervousness, irritability, negativity or mental depression, frequent urination, runny nose, headaches, lower heart rate, depression, rashes, colds and fevers.

Many people find their symptoms tolerable and are encouraged to bear with them because the body in its innate wisdom actually knows what it is doing a whole lot better than your conscious mind, I assure you. The more you rest and sleep, the quicker and easier it is to go through. Be grateful you are having these symptoms and realize that your body will feel younger as you are becoming healthier, discarding wastes which would have otherwise brought pain and disease.

Stabilization & Build-Up

The second stage of detoxification is called stabilization. Weight loss drops off, symptoms become diminished, detox symptoms are not so noticeable and your body becomes stable.

The third and final stage is referred to as the build-up stage. This occurs when your body has been renovated properly and will not produce symptoms. The good food and water you are consuming and the lifestyle and attitude shift that naturally occurs will help continue your path of optimal health.

You will experience new levels of health, joy, energy and enthusiasm than ever before!

We must learn to eat simple, wholesome, local, and organic natural foods, properly prepared and combined, and in return our bodies will abandon the whole lot of poisons we have consumed over the course of our lives. The mysteries of the human body and the dynamic forces working in nature are far beyond what our minds are prepared to understand at present. Every great physician or scientist who ever lived humbly admired the wonders of nature.
