Raw Food for Lymphatic Health: Cleaning Out Your Body’s Waste

by Michele Santo

The lymphatic system is the foundation of the immune system. The body breaks down food and transports the necessary nutrients to where they’re needed, and in the process some waste is created in between the cells. Think of the lymphatic system like a sewer system. It takes garbage from the cells, moves it through the blood and onto the colon and kidneys for proper removal. If the system is not working properly, the body will drown in its own gunk. Gross! If you keep it flowing, free and clean, colds will be a thing of the past. Sweet!

Get this: The body has more lymphatic fluid than blood. Who knew!?

A good example of lymphatic fluid is the fluid you get in a blister. You may be familiar with the lymph nodes that are located in the throat (tonsils), neck, groin and under the arm. The largest piece of lymphatic tissue in the body is the spleen.

Cleaning up the lymphatic system will improve skin issues, headaches, sinus problems, colds, high cholesterol, constipation, weak immune system, and chronic fatigue. Hooray!

Here are 3 actions to clean up your lymphatic system’s act:

1) Jump! Literally.

I highly recommend jumping on a trampoline like any happy kid would do. It’s called rebounding which aides the lymphatic circulation by stimulating the millions of one-way valves in the system. Jumping up and down improves the diffusion and peristalsis of interstitial fluid between the cells. Better circulation means better cell health. Yeah baby!

2) Hydrate!

The rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight of water in ounces. For example, if you weight 160 pounds, then you should drink 80 ounces of water daily. Alcohol, tea or juice doesn’t count in this equation. Sorry!

3) Nibble!

Acids and enzymes in raw fruit are powerful lymph cleansers, especially on an empty stomach. Give your lymph the tools it needs to cleanse oh so deeply. Add more raw fruits, vegetables, salads and fresh juices to your diet. You can include these lymph friendly foods in your diet:

  • onions

  • garlic
  • ginger
  • avocados
  • seaweeds like kelp and kombu
  • wheatgrass juice and other vegetable juices
  • citrus and other tart fruits
  • bitter foods like radish, mustard greens and kale
  • flax seed and other Omega 3 fatty acids
  • raw walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds

Minimising the Toxins: Inside and Out

Let’s be real here. What you consume and swipe on your skin becomes a part of your body. It seeps into your bloodstream. It enters your cells and becomes your tissues. Like a domino affect, it affects your bodily systems. Crazy, right?  I think since we do not have a telescope to peer into our bodacious bodies, it doesn’t cross the mind so much.

So, be mindful. Before you take a bite or rub potion on your skin, ask yourself, “Do I want this to become a part of me like a lover would? Might there be a more natural option? How will it affect me?” Make the smartest choice out of what ya got. We at The Raw Divas are here to listen to you vent or boast on your journey to empowered health. Do tell us how it goes!
